They are trying hard at the Vintage Luxury Yacht Hotel. They don’t quite make it, but it is still a fun, quirky and affordable hotel afloat on the river in downtown Yangon.

The Victoria Bar and its open-air deck are an appealing spot for a pre-dinner drink, but the restaurants – the 1920 Industrial Restaurant and the Pirate Restaurant and Robinson Crusoe Bar – only offer unmemorable European, Myanmar and Indian cuisine, plus weekend buffet dinners for $25 (£17). Breakfast goes global, giving the adventurous the chance to try a tame version of Mohinga – the national breakfast noodle and fish soup dish – or you can stick to hash browns.
